  17. <p>Israel admits a new peace-talks player, but delay looms
  18. </p>
  19. <p>     For one brief sweet moment, it seemed that the Middle East
  20. peace talks scheduled to reconvene this week after a four-month
  21. hiatus might be more than another round in an interminable game.
  22. Israel agreed to deal directly with a major participant
  23. previously excluded from the table--Faisal Husseini, the
  24. mastermind of the Palestinian delegation. Israel had objected
  25. to Husseini because he comes from East Jerusalem, an area the
  26. country contends is its own. It agreed to include him in hopes
  27. of boosting his relatively moderate position. But days before
  28. the talks were to begin, the main Arab participants asked for
  29. a postponement. The request seemed related to Palestinian
  30. displeasure over both Israel's closure of the occupied
  31. territories and its refusal to repatriate nearly 400
  32. Palestinians who remain in southern Lebanon since their
  33. deportation in December. But responding to U.S. dismay, the
  34. Arabs may yet rethink their position.
